Boogaloo Hip Hop Dance Crew
Boogaloo Dance Crew is a Vancouver based dance troupe led by Jheric Hizon (B-Boy “Twist”). The group has been performing for many years and are versed in Hip-hop and Break Dancing, a style of dance that includes a variety of styles.
Break Dancing was developing in New York while other Hip Hop styles were being created in California. Dance styles such as roboting, bopping, hitting, locking, bustin', popping, boogaloo, strutting, sac-ing, and dime-stopping. Out of all of these dances, Boogaloo is one of the oldest. It started out as a 1960s fad dance and developed into a street dance style called Boogaloo in Oakland, CA, as well as a separate music genre called Latin boogaloo. The most popular and widely practiced of the funk styles are Locking and popping.
As breaking, locking, and popping gained popularity in the 1980s, hip-hop social dancing started to develop. The previously mentioned dances are a sample of the many that have appeared since hip-hop developed into a distinct dance style. Like hip-hop music, hip-hop social dancing continues to change as new songs are released and new dances are created to accompany them.
Boogaloo believes that the art of dance has the power to influence and affect change in the world. Their mission is to inspire and empower lifelong artistic awareness through actualizing natural creative capacities, using the power of music and the art of dance. They are proud to nurture and encourage creativity and inspire, motivate and bring everyone together to share in the passion and joy of the arts.
